Why Your Skincare “Stopped Working”
It probably didn’t stop working.
Your skin changed.
One of the most common things we hear in clinic is:
“My products used to work… and now they don’t.”
More often than not, the issue isn’t the product. It’s the context.
Skin is dynamic. It responds to what’s happening internally and externally. What worked six months ago may not be what your skin needs today and that’s not failure. That’s physiology.
Let’s look at why.
1. Stress
Chronic stress increases cortisol levels, which can disrupt your skin barrier, trigger breakouts, increase sensitivity, and slow healing.
When stress is high, your skin may feel more reactive, dull or inflamed, even if your routine hasn’t changed.
Sometimes the answer isn’t adding more.
It’s calming everything down.
2. Seasons
Skin behaves differently in winter versus summer.
Cooler months can compromise barrier function and increase dehydration. Warmer months bring sweat, oil production and environmental exposure.
If your routine doesn’t evolve with the season, your skin can start to feel “off.” That doesn’t mean your products failed, it means they may need adjusting.
3. Hormones
Hormonal fluctuations; monthly cycles, perimenopause, lifestyle shifts can alter oil production, sensitivity and collagen support.
Skin that once felt balanced can suddenly feel dry, reactive or breakout-prone.
This isn’t random. It’s biological.
4. Barrier Damage
Over-exfoliation, layering too many actives, or chasing quick results can compromise the skin barrier.
When the barrier is impaired, even the best products can sting, irritate or feel ineffective. In reality, your skin is simply overwhelmed.
A compromised barrier doesn’t need more correction.
It needs support.
5. Overuse of Actives
Retinoids. Acids. Vitamin C. Enzymes.
These ingredients can be incredibly beneficial, when used appropriately.
But more isn’t better. Layering too many active ingredients can create inflammation, sensitivity, and inconsistent results.
When skin feels unpredictable, it’s often a sign to simplify.
The Takeaway
If your skincare “stopped working,” pause before you overhaul everything.
More often than not, your skin isn’t asking for more products. It’s asking for:
— Consistency
— Barrier support
— A simplified routine
— A plan that makes sense for you
Come back to basics.
Support first, then treat.
If you’re unsure what your skin needs right now, that’s where we come in. A thoughtful review of your routine can often do more than starting from scratch.
Because healthy skin isn’t about constant correction.
It’s about understanding change and responding with care.
