Deep Dive: Perimenopause, Menopause and Skin
When your skin suddenly stops feeling like your skin
There’s a particular sentence we hear in clinic:
“My skin has just… changed.”
It might feel drier. More sensitive. Less predictable. Products you’ve used for years suddenly don’t feel quite right. Makeup sits differently. Your usual routine isn’t giving your skin what it once did.
And for some women, these changes can begin during perimenopause, well before menopause itself.
So, let’s talk about what’s actually happening.
First: peri and menopause aren’t the same thing
Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormone levels can fluctuate and menstrual cycles begin to change.
Menopause marks a different point in that transition.
And while every experience is individual, hormonal changes across these stages can influence the way skin looks, feels and behaves.
In other words: if your skin suddenly feels different, there may be more going on than a product that has “stopped working”.
Why does skin change?
Oestrogen plays a role in processes involved in skin hydration, barrier function and structure.
As hormone levels fluctuate and eventually decline, some women may notice changes including:
— Dryness
— Increased sensitivity
— Changes in texture
— Reduced resilience
— Changes in firmness
— A routine that suddenly feels like too much
Not everyone will experience the same changes, or experience them at the same time.
And importantly, perimenopausal or menopausal skin isn’t a skin type.
It’s skin moving through a new stage.
The dryness can feel different
Sometimes it isn’t simply a matter of reaching for a heavier moisturiser.
Skin may feel tighter, rougher or less comfortable as its ability to retain moisture changes.
This is where we often look at the whole routine.
Is your cleanser too stripping?
Are you using too many actives?
Does your barrier need more support?
Sometimes the answer isn’t another product.
It’s an edit.
And suddenly, everything feels sensitive
This is another conversation we hear often.
“I’ve used this forever. Why does it suddenly sting?”
When skin becomes drier or its barrier is less resilient, a routine that once felt completely comfortable may begin to feel like too much.
The instinct is often to find something new to correct it.
We prefer to simplify first.
Support the barrier. Reduce unnecessary irritation. Then reassess what your skin actually needs.
What about firmness?
Changes in collagen and skin structure are a natural part of ageing, and hormonal changes around menopause can contribute to changes in the way skin looks and feels.
But this isn’t a cue to start correcting everything at once.
There is no single serum, supplement, cream or treatment that addresses every change associated with peri or menopause.
Good skin care at this stage is about understanding what has changed and supporting the skin you have now.
So, what actually helps?
Start with the foundations.
— Gentle cleansing
— Hydration
— Barrier support
— Daily broad-spectrum SPF
— Thoughtful use of active ingredients
— Consistency
Then personalise from there.
If you're experiencing broader symptoms of perimenopause or menopause, speak with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. Skin is only one part of a much bigger hormonal picture.
Your skin changed. Your routine can too.
Maybe that’s the conversation we need to have more often.
The routine that worked beautifully at 35 doesn’t have to be the routine you use at 45, 55 or beyond.
Your skin evolves.
Your care should be allowed to evolve with it.
No panic.
No throwing out the entire bathroom cabinet.
No trying to correct everything at once.
Just a more considered understanding of what your skin needs now.
Support first. Then reassess.
