Ingredient deep dive — Vitamin A. Everything about vitamin A, what it does, and more.

Prescription Vitamin A otherwise known as tretinoin is the most scientifically backed topical vitamin, which assists with the reduction of lines and wrinkles, and is only available via doctors prescription.

Retinol is a vitamin A, which is a type of retinoid that can be found in skincare products however it has a lower concentration of retinoic acid, it is a lot less intense on the skin. When looking for retinol on an ingredients list, it can be found under names like retinyl linoleate, retinyl acetate and retinyl palmitate and these ingredients are often combined with others to both hydrate and brighten the skin.

Retinoids refer to other vitamin A derivatives that are converted into retinoic acid, this will help to increase the quality of your skin and thicken its top layer.

Retinol is often the better option for most, as long as you are willing to wait for the results, however if you suffer from acne or scarring retinoid may be considered a better option as it has a higher concentration and will cause the cells to turn over a lot faster, therefore results will be a lot quicker.

When wearing either retinol or retinoids it is very important to wear SPF 50 as it can cause a lot of sensitivity to skin, so it is very important to have a layer of protection to avoid any reactions.
